Gula Melaka (a.k.a palm sugar) is an unrefined sugar that's rich in vitamins and minerals (potassium, phosphorus, zinc, iron, manganese and copper). It also contain the same 16 amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and are needed for cell growth and repair.
Most importantly, gula Melaka is known to have a low glycemic index (GI). A low GI indicates that food is slowly absorbed, preventing the spike in insulin level. Gula Melaka has GI of 35, compared to table sugar at 68.
